Dancing Though Life
Wicked is such a cool musical. The storyline is cute, and the music is just so amazing... It's just funny, cuz the values are a little backwards, in a way, and so backwards that the idea actually comes through. Appearences are deceiving.
Every character has their approach, right, so Galinda is all about looks and appearence--
"It's not about aptitude
it's the way your viewed
so it's very shrewed to be
very very popular
like me"
And then there's Fiyero-- the brainless. I named this post after his song:
"Dancing through life
skimming the surface
gliding where turf is smooth
Life is painless
for the brainless...
Those who don't try
never look foolish..."
Of course-- the wizard himself is a complete hypocrite:
"They call me "wonderful"
so I am wonderful
in fact -- it's so much who I am
it's part of my name
...trust me, it's fun!"
He adds: "Where I'm from, we believe in all sorts of things that aren't true. We call it -- 'history'."
But Elphaba couldn't care less about looks (She really CAN'T care more, though, because she's green..), or about what anyone thinks of her:
"So be it then:
let all Oz be agreed
I'm wicked through and through
since I cannot succeed..."
She doesn't even bother to look likable.
So yeah, the theme of the story is Appearences Are Deceiving, and what, only one character suggests it? So that's just it-- it's so sarcastic that you get the idea. I wonder if I could analyze this play for a few extra points on my bagrut.
